The deer stands beneath red maple leaves on October’s animal card. Japan National Tourism Organization’s cultural guide calls deer and maple a common pairing in Japanese art. The card belongs to that broader autumn vocabulary.

Modern photographs often make the pairing feel inseparable from Nara. The official Nara travel guide points visitors to deer moving through yellow ginkgo and red maple around Nara Park. The Hanafuda card itself does not name Nara or document a particular landscape.

How The Card Scores

In Koi-Koi’s current ruleset, the October deer is an animal card. It can join July’s boar and June’s butterflies to form Inoshikacho, one of the best-known three-card yaku. The same October suit also contains a blue ribbon that can join the June and September blue ribbons for Aotan.

Rules vary by table and app. These classifications describe the site’s linked Koi-Koi ruleset, not every historical or regional form of play.

A Seasonal Pairing

The image works without pinning it to a single story. Deer are active animals in an autumn landscape. Maple leaves provide the color that people travel to see. Artists and card makers can place the two together and let the season do the explaining.

How We Know

The deer-and-maple pairing comes from Japan National Tourism Organization’s cultural history of autumn leaves. The Nara setting is supported by the official Nara travel guide. Nintendo Museum supplies the 48-card, 12-month deck structure, while card classification and yaku come from the current Koi-Koi rules documentation.
