September brings night festivals, food events, shrine rites and sports tournaments. Heat and typhoons can still affect travel.

This edition covers 21 sourced September event records, including northern harvest events and major gatherings in Tokyo and Chiba.

Early September festivals

Owara Kaze no Bon in Toyama runs September 1-3, with dance and shamisen performances in narrow streets. Okinawa Zento Eisa Festival follows on September 4-6. In the north, Kakunodate Festival in Akita runs September 7-9, then Hanamaki Festival in Iwate lands September 11-13.

Events to plan around

Several September records work as itinerary anchors. Sapporo Autumn Fest begins September 11 and runs into October. Grand Sumo September Tournament runs September 13-27 in Tokyo. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Reitaisai runs September 14-16 in Kamakura.

The back half gets crowded. Tokyo Game Show runs September 17-21 in Chiba, with public days September 19-21. Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games begins September 19 and runs through October 4, making late September a major-event travel period across Aichi. Kishiwada Danjiri Festival runs September 19-20 in Osaka, while Yamagata Imonikai Festival gathers around communal food on September 20. By September 24-27, Tokyo Big Sight is handling tourism industry and public travel events, and Matsue Suitoro Water Lantern Festival starts its weekend-and-holiday run on September 26.

Check exhibition closing dates. Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Museum special exhibition closes September 8. Nara National Museum’s Buddhist painting exhibition closes September 13. Chuson-ji’s 900th-anniversary secret Buddha opening continues deep into November.

Travel Pressure Points

The 2026 holiday sequence sharpens the late-month calendar. The Cabinet Office lists Respect for the Aged Day on September 21, a holiday under Article 3 paragraph 3 on September 22, and Autumnal Equinox Day on September 23. Check hotel availability and rail reservations for September 19-23.

For your route, go north for food and early-autumn air, go to Tohoku for street festivals and historical processions, go to Tokyo or Chiba for scale and contemporary culture, go to Kansai for danjiri intensity, and watch late September carefully if your route touches Aichi, Tokyo Big Sight, or major holiday travel corridors.

Chrysanthemums and moon-viewing

Choyo no Sekku falls on September 9. Kokugakuin University’s Encyclopedia of Shinto identifies Choyo as the Chrysanthemum Festival, traditionally associated with chrysanthemums, longevity, and chrysanthemum-petal wine. That gives the month its symbolic flower, and it also explains why September is the chrysanthemum suit in Hanafuda.

In the Koi-Koi deck used by this site, the four September cards are:

  • Sake cup, treated in Koi-Koi as an animal/object card.
  • Blue ribbon.
  • Chrysanthemum chaff card.
  • Chrysanthemum chaff card.

Nintendo Museum summarizes the deck structure this way: Hanafuda uses flowering plants associated with the seasons, with four cards for each month from January through December, making 48 cards.

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan places Chushu no Meigetsu on September 25, while the astronomical full moon occurs on September 27 at 01:49 Japan Standard Time. Late-September evening events also include Moon Art Night Shimokitazawa and Matsue’s lantern festival.

How We Know

This edition combines Japan Almanac’s September event records with institutional sources for seasonal framing, public holidays, moon dates, Choyo no Sekku, and Hanafuda structure. Individual event records and their sources are available in the event index and map.
